Where are you from?
London via Derbyshire
How did you start DJing or what lead you to be a DJ?
My friend had a bar so I asked if I could play and it all went from there! My first set was just crossfading between my laptop and my iphone. I soon caught the bug though and learned how to mix from a music producer pal.
Who influences you? Where do you draw inspiration from?
I always have an ear out for music that excites me. I used to work for a music magazine, and that constant access to a new sounds really informed how important it is to stay ahead of the curve…or at least with the curve to an extent. Now I get a lot of new music from artists I follow on social media, musician buddies and from artists I work with when I’m moonlighting as a fashion stylist. I’m also constantly shazaming when I’m out and about, so if you ever see me in public standing on a chair with my phone aloft, you’ll know what I’m up to. I also think it’s really important to take requests when you’re DJing. I always take a note of what people want to hear, especially if they have a discerning air about them.
What kind of music do you like to play? What styles can you play?
I do (and can) play to a specific style if it’s called for, but it’s very rare that I adhere to 1 genre during a set. I tend to let the tone of the night be decided by what the crowd are responding to. My trick is to whip through as many genres as is reasonable in the first hour to see what sticks. During sets where I’m able to just play what I want, I slalom through old and new pop, hip hop, rock ‘n’ roll, r&b, house, garage, disco and afrobeat. I try to be as unselfconscious as possible when I’m playing. I love being silly and surprising a crowd, so you might hear Drake blending with Tina Turner, metal bleeding into Britney or a massive Salsa track mixing into hip hop. My goal every night is to get everyone on their feet dancing until they’re exhausted.
